Abstract: The Sun Also Rises written by Ernest Hemingway reflects the American society of 1920s vividly. In the novel, the heroes Jake Barnes, Brett, and Romero are the representatives of the Lost Generation. This article, by analyzing the three characters respectively, tries to interpret the dual nature of the Lost Generation. Jake and Brett suffer pains caused by the war and become depressed. Hanging around different bars and hotels, they don’t know the direction of life and even hold a negative outlook on life. They are lost, but that doesn’t mean that they are ruined. Jake doesn’t succumb to the cruel reality. He is hard-working and desires to pursue the true meaning of life. Though Brett experiences misfortune in marriage, she resists and tries to be independent. To a certain degree, Romero’s courage in bull-fight has a positive influence upon them. His bravery urges them to struggle to survive in difficulties. This paper concludes that as victims of the war, these young people are on the surface negative and aimless, but inwardly they never allow themselves to be at the mercy of fate.
