Abstract: Catch-22 is one of the bestsellers of Joseph Heller. It is also one of typical representative books of black humor. The novel mainly describes many absurd characters in a symbolic way. In this novel, many words, phrases, and dialogues are disorderly, repeating, dubious and paradoxical. Joseph Heller uses his own method to tell us the absolute power of bureaucracy. This paper mainly analyzes black humor in Catch-22 from the perspectives of the theme and characters, which can be of great help for readers to have a deep understanding about black humor implied in the novel of Catch-22.
