ABSTRACT:This paper aims at discovery the interrelationship between metonymy and educational level of readers. Metonymy is a figure of speech used in rhetoric in which a thing or concept is not called by its own name, but by the name of something intimately associated with that thing or concept. English news is increasingly read around the world and headlines are the windows of English news, so the ability of comprehending the headlines is necessary for readers. It is widely known that the application of metonymy in English News Headlines is necessary. Correct and appropriate metonymy used in English news Headlines can convey idea and emotion more properly and can be easily accepted by readers. Educational level of an individual is greatly known as educational background. Through the analysis of educational level of the readers, it is found out that people who have superior understanding of language could comprehend the English news headlines better.

摘 要:本文主要研究转喻与受众文化水平之间的内在关系。转喻是指一个词或词组被另一个与之有紧密联系的词或词组替换的修辞方法,同时更是一种认知手段。新闻标题是英语新闻的窗口,由于英语新闻报刊在世界范围内被广泛阅读所以读者对英语新闻标题的理解能力是十分必要的。现在的英语新闻标题中转喻被广泛的运用,在英语新闻标题中恰当的使用转喻,可以准确的表达思想同时更加易于读者接受。一个个体的认知水平被广泛的认为是其受教育水平,通过研究发现有相对较高的受教育水平的读者对使用了转喻的英语新闻标题有更深刻的了解。
