[Abstract] Style translation is one of the most complicated issues in translation, which has long been discussed by translators. There are evidences showing the difficulties and impossibilities of style translation, let alone the style equivalence. However, it does not really mean that style equivalence is impossible and unnecessary. In support of this view, three aspects are presented in this paper: first, some common obstacles in style equivalence are introduced; second, the possibilities of style equivalence are demonstrated; third, the necessities of style equivalence are argued. It comes to the conclusion that style equivalence is possible and necessary though obstacles exist. The conclusion also calls for an enhancement of the competence of the translators so as to maximally achieve the equivalence between the translation and the source text. In addition, this paper is presented in a descriptive way by making comparisons between some English-Chinese translations and quoting some famous translators’ views on translation from home and abroad, such as the views from Eugene A. Nida, Qian Zhongshu, Mao Dun, and so on.
