Abstract: William Makepeace Thackeray is a famous critical realist in the nineteenth century. His masterpiece Vanity Fair has two main female representative characters: Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley. The paper is aimed to study the contrast between two heroines in terms of their different characters and different attitudes towards money, love and life. It concludes that both of them are the victims of the capitalism and the patriarchal society, thus revealing the deep theme of the novel: to criticize the social reality in the nineteenth century England that people paid more attention to the money.

摘要:萨克雷是英国19世纪著名的批判现实主义小说家,他的代表作《名利场》中有两个主要女性代表人物:夏普和爱米丽亚。本文旨在对比研究这两位女主角的不同性格、不同金钱观,爱情观以及人生观,指出两位女主人公同是资本主义和父权社会的受害者,从而揭示了作品的深刻主题: 批判十九世纪初英国金钱至上的社会现实。
