Abstract: Sons and Lovers is an autobiographical work of Lawrence, a modern British novelist. This novel depicts the emotional entanglements between Mrs. Morel and her son, Paul. Many critics believe that this novel is a typical case of “Oedipus complex”, but it is not enough to analyze the mother-child relationship just from the perspective of Paul, it is also necessary to interpret it from the mother’s standpoint. In order to thoroughly and clearly analyze the mother-child relationship between Mrs. Morel and Paul, this paper mainly studies “Phaedra complex” in Sons and Lovers. It first presents the research background of this topic and gives a brief introduction of Lawrence’s life and Sons and Lovers, and then analyzes the origin of “Phaedra complex”. The following chapters discuss the embodiments of “Phaedra complex” in the novel, the causes and the effects of “Phaedra complex”. It is hoped that the analysis will provide a new understanding of this novel.
