Abstract:With the development of globalization, movies have become an important carrier in cross-cultural communication. However, different countries have different cultural background, people cannot understand in the same way. Therefore, movie subtitle plays an important role in a movie. This dissertation discusses movie subtitle translation under the guidance of Sperber & Wilson’s relevance theory and Gutt’s relevance translation theory. It analyzes the translation process from three aspects, namely, the original script, the translator and the target language audience. The translator uses a dynamic express-reasoning process analysis to express information and intended meaning of the movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and strives to make the audience get fully understanding through minimum effort.
Movie subtitle translation can be analyzed from multiple perspectives, but most researchers discuss the translation problems from the requirements of the target language audience instead of discussing the relevance between original script and translators, and translators and target language audience. Relevance theory expands the scope of the pragmatic interpretation, and provides a unified theory framework for communication. The hero of Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a typical American junior high school student; he is naughty and full of crafty idea in his mind. The story happened to this wimpy kid shows the real life and the emotional world of a teenager to the audience.
This paper launches a case study of subtitle translation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid under the guidance of relevance theory. The translated Chinese subtitles have been transcribed from network subtitle translator group. This dissertation aims to provide several translation strategies as examples analysis with the dynamic adjustment, explicitation and domestication in the reflection of translation, to make the best and effective delivering of movie subtitle to the target language audience.
