Abstract: Hemingway, one of the most splendid American novelists in the 20th century, has an abundant war experience in his life. He has experienced and felt the war by joining the army, which is greatly revealed in his works. Ernest Hemingway and his writings have already been studied from a wide variety of critical perspectives. This thesis will illustrate the embodiment of Henry’s lack of individual value by analyzing Henry’s role as an ordinary person,a soldier and a lover. Based on the description, this thesis will further analyze the causes of Henry’s lack of individual value, and draw the conclusion that the cruelty of war , the character of Henry and the destruction of love cause Henry’s desperation and disillusionment.
