Abstract: According to the related research of English idioms in terms of their definition and origins, this paper takes some parts of the typical lines in the popular US series Friends as language materials to analyze some specific characteristics of common English idioms, which make idioms in television works mainly perform the pragmatic function and make daily communication more brief and lively. In addition, through detailed analyses of these lines, the author describes three characteristics of common English idioms: stability of structure, diversity of style and vividness of image; and three typical functions of common English idioms: ideational function, textual function, communicative function. This paper mainly adopts the case study method in the aim of applying theory to practice. It is helpful for English learners in deeper understanding and proper use of common English idioms, thereby to improve their English comprehensive ability.
