Abstract:This paper mainly discusses the different connotations and translations of different color words in Chinese and English cultures. Through the analysis of various meanings of the color words in different levels, we can understand their literal meaning and extended meaning formed by the social history and special customs. There are a number of vocabularies in the two languages that present differences or similarities with different national emotions because of cultural conflicts resulting from religion, politics,customs, values, historical origin,and economy. Therefore, some bias and misunderstandings maybe caused during translation and communication. This essay aims to improve communication and avoid cultural conflicts based on analysis of internal and external connotations of color words, so as to have a better and effective intercultural conversion and communication from the original to the target language. Different ways are summarized to translate the color words from light of comparative studies on them on the basis of detailed translation examples, which are of great significance and value to English and Chinese bilingual translation.
