Abstract:Virginia Woolf, a British women writer, is considered to be one of the greatest modern writers who successfully employ the stream of consciousness technique. The paper aims to analyze Virginia Woolf’ s using of stream of consciousness in TO the Lighthouse and demonstrate its functions in the novel. By illustration of the application of interior monologue, free association, shuffle of time and space and symbolic images, the paper concretely interprets Woolf’ s successful employment of the technique in this famous work. These approaches involved greatly help capture the inner world of the characters and reveal the author’s unique insights on the meaning of life.
