Abstract: This study aims to investigate the application of nursery rhymes in primary school English teaching. And tries to present an appropriate teaching approch in order to get a better teaching effect. This study expounds the physiological and mental characteristics of primary school students, in according to which some teaching approaches and some types of nursery rhymes are summarized.

In primary school English teaching, teachers mostly focus on English word teaching instead of the real practice in daily life. Students know the meanings of words, but they can not use the word to conduct a conversation, to speak or to write a composition. What does this phenomenon result from? After inquiring some primary school teachers and observing the performance of primary school students in a primary school, it is found that is because the students do not have interests in English studying and they feel boring in English lessons.
“Essentials of Primary School English Teaching and Textbook Writing”says that interest is the essential element in language learning. It is an important task for the teachers to arouse the students’ interests in primary school English teaching. So in primary school English teaching, teachers should consider the physiological and mental characteristics of primary school students in order to arouse their interests.
