Abstract:The level of English reading ability is an important criterion for measuring students' English language ability. To improve students' ability to use English comprehensively, they must first improve their English reading ability.
Questionnaire surveys were conducted on the English reading problems of nearly 60 high school students in Manasi number 1 Middle School and Manasi Yuanmeng Education and Training Institute, and the survey results show that students have many obstacles in reading English, such as low interest, obstacles in vocabulary, grammar, cultural background knowledge, reading habits, and so on. According to the survey results, students’ English reading interest has increased significantly with the increase of grades, from 34% to 67%. At the same time, the vocabulary of students has also ascended steadily, from 30% to 75%. However, compared with vocabulary and interests, the grammatical difficulty showed a trend of decline.
Therefore, this article elaborates the problems existing in the students and how to improve the middle school students' skills and methods of reading English. These skills and methods not only help middle school students improve their English reading ability, but also enhance their English comprehensiveness.
