ABSTRACT:Reading is one of the indispensable parts of English learning. It has four basic and important parts (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and reading is a comprehensive skill which costs English learners lots of time. But it can also reveal those English learners’ ability and level. Therefore, it means that reading is not just a subject to test but also a key to learn English well. Two years ago, the new English Curriculum Standards were issued and paid a lot of attention to how to improve the reading ability in junior school. Regardless of its great importance, there are still a lot of problems existing in the English reading teaching. Because the former teaching methods paid much attention to the superficial aspects, it is not easy to raise students’ interest to learn English reading and to learn it well. TBLT, which is the so-called Task Based Language Teaching, is a student-oriented teaching approach and it advocates that students should play a more active role in reading instead of their teachers. And even though many researches have been done to study TBLT, there are still many problems existing and it is hard to apply it into English reading teaching.
However, TBLT has changed the traditional teaching mode which mainly relies on teachers’ teaching rather than students’ participation. It now has become student-oriented and students are playing more important roles in the class. In addition, TBLT requires teachers to be more familiar with their English knowledge and keep updating their teaching resources. The teachers should instruct the students to understand the meaning and purpose of the tasks in the class, and teachers still need to help students complete those tasks successfully. At the same time, teachers also have to point out the mistakes and guide students to correct them. Through the process of completing the tasks, students could not only learn English reading well, but also achieve the sense of achievement and happiness. And they will greatly improve students’ reading ability and raise their interests in reading.
