Abstract: Death euphemisms are wildly used in the news English but most of them are not properly translated, for many translators fail to consider the objectives of the news and to use correspondingly proper translation strategies. This thesis mainly deals with the translation of death euphemisms in news English, trying to improve the translation of death euphemisms in news English and to enhance readers’ awareness of metaphorical meanings in news English. The author bases on previous theoretical researches, collects material from news English, and from the perspective of Skopos theory analyzes the objectives of death euphemisms in news English. Therefore, the author classifies news objectives into three types which are straightforward information, emotional expression and cultural communication, and conciseness, and puts forward three corresponding strategies, understatement, substation and simplification, respectively for more proper translation of death euphemisms in news English.
