中文摘要：文化翻译作为文化传播的有效媒介，在跨文化交际中起着重要的作用。在文化翻译领域，作为中国文化的典型缩影，文化负载词的英译一直以来都是学者所研究的重点课题。但是文化负载词带有特殊文化涵义，给译者也带来了不少翻译挑战。本论文以目的论为理论指导，以沈从文小说《边城》戴乃迭英译本中的文化负载词的汉英翻译为研究语料，对其翻译策略进行解析，研究目的理论如何影响翻译策略的选择，以及如何帮助译者实现翻译目的。通过分析诸多例子，本研究发现，在目的论指导下，文献型翻译和工具型翻译都是文化负载词英译的有效的翻译方法选择。戴乃迭英译本采用文献型翻译策略以保持原文风格，更好传播原汁原味的湘西文化；同时以工具型翻译策略作为补充，提高译文可读性和流利性。两种翻译策略相辅相成，互为补充，共同达到传播中国文化的目的。因此，本论文的意义在于不仅有利于扩大文化负载词英译的研究领域，也有助于提高对于沈从文作品英译本的关注重视，并且对于文化翻译和跨文化交际领域都有启发意义，旨在促进中西方文化交流，推介中国文化走向世界舞台。
