第八章讲述了在布莱克家工作的另一名女佣范妮告诉了“我”她无心听到的事情。一位伯爵夫人拜访了女管家，虽然女管家对她的态度不冷不热，可是她仍很高兴地与她说长道短。但布莱克先生回来后，伯爵夫人的态度就变了，看上去想立刻离开。布莱克阻止后两人一起上楼进了布莱克的房间。范妮跟上从锁孔中听到了一些秘密，因为害怕，所以范妮没有听完全部的谈话内容。后来，“我”有辗转去了伯爵夫人家，想利用夫人喜欢古董这一点来得到一些线索。
第九章讲述了正当侦探们一筹莫展的时候，收到了一封葛雷安的信。信中说，发现了一具与他们描述的很相像的尸体。他们赶往停尸房，发现死去的这名女子正是不久前与布莱克在街角说话的那个女孩。于是，他们决定去布莱克家问清楚情况。
第十章讲述了侦探们来到了布莱克家，一开始布莱克并没有认出他们，不知道布莱克是在假装还是真的不记得了。布莱克声称自己并不认识在他家失踪的女佣，而从收集到的证物以及探子的情报来看，布莱克并不能证明自己是清白的。为了证明自己，他同意让侦探们到他的工作室查看，结果却被古莱发现画像背后的秘密。
INTRODUCTION
A Strange Disappearance is a book written by Anna Katharine Green, who has been called "the mother of the detective novel" in America. It is about a case about a strange disappearance. A girl sewed for Mr. Blake’s disappeared in his house. Compared with the housekeeper, Mr. Blake seemed to not care about this girl any more and said that he knew little bout the girl. With the upcoming of the evidences and improvement of the case, the truth turns out gradually. The missing girl was Mr. Blake’s wife. Mr. Blake was forced to marry with her in order to get the family property. He loved his cousin, but his cousin left him to seek to fame and wealth. Finally, he found that he loved his wife but she disappeared. Those who took Luttra away were her father and brother. They wanted to extort money from Mr. Blake. The police made elaborate plans and rescued Luttra successfully. The couple gathered together. This translation was elected from chapter eight to ten in this book.
Chapter eight is mainly about another maid Fanny in Mr. Blake’s house told me about something she overheard. One Countess called on the housekeeper and met with Mr. Blake by accident. She turned her face when she saw Mr. Blake. Fanny followed Mr. Blake and the Countess getting upstairs and listened to their talking through the keyhole. Because of fear, she just heard a little and snuck quickly. I took advantages of the Countess’s interest and got some clues in her house.
Chapter nine is mainly about the detectives got a letter from Graham as finding no way out. It said that the dead body of a girl was just like the one they described. They hurried to the Pier, and found that this girl was the one who talked with Mr. Blake at the street corner a few days before. They decided to go to Mr. Blake’s house to investigate the concrete situation.
Chapter ten talks about the things happened in Mr. Blake’s house. Mr. Blake said that he didn’t know the girl missing in his house. However, according to the evidence and investigation, Mr. Blake can’t defend himself. Therefore, he agreed to let the detectives to enter his studio. At last, Mr. Gryce found the secret of the picture on the wall.
