INTRODUCTION

“The Colossus” and “Ariel” are both magnum opuses of Sylvia Plath, and for readers, they do have some difficulty in interpreting the two master works. The author deems that this piece of journals offers readers an efficient approach to probe into “the birth circumstance” and “the root system” of “poetic gift”.

The journals elaborate the poet’s creative intents. The drama of “death”, “birth”, and “rebirth” has been putting on the stage, which happened in the inner world of the poet. And she fulfilled her first collection The Colossus by acquiring muses from the last process. On the other hand, the journals underline the inner world of the poet, hence, the comprehension of the journal is to look into the poems. In addition, the Jungian defines this process as “the alchemical individuation of the self: the birth of her new creative self.” Later in 1959, she wrote her important dream into a poem “The Stones”, which was the turn point of her career and the birth of her poetic gift.

The journals disclose that poet exert herself to utilize her poetic gift. After 1953, she achieved great success: the publication of The Colossus and The Bell Jar as well as the completion of Ariel.

The new self had access to the victory from Ariel with no hope of save her life. In the end, she gave an end to her life at young age on February 11, 1963 in the morning.
