INTRODUCTION
Wave is a memoir, which describes the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 that the author experienced by herself. She objectively describes the tsunami and her painful life after the tsunami. It is an appealing memoir. The memoir in pages 3 to 29 is chosen for translation.
This part of memoir shows a real scene of tsunami, the fear from the author and her sadness of losing all her family.
The former part includes the happening of tsunami and people being in distress.
The author writes about her friend’s doubt of the unusual tide before the tsunami at first. Then she found that the wave was obviously unusual. They started to get away the hotel, but they still could not flee away and were caught by the tsunami.
She writes clearly about how she found the unusual tide, how she took her children and her husband to flee away the hotel and how she get into a jeep car, but she still could not get away the tsunami. She describes these matters fluently with natural transition, which makes people feel a sense of urgency.
The latter part is about her being rescued and what she saw, heard and felt in the disaster relief center.
She escaped from the tsunami luckily, and then she was saved by the rescue worker and sent to the disaster relief center. At first, she refused to be saved, because she didn’t find her husband and children. Then she didn’t find her family in the disaster relief center and the hospital, so she realized that only she survived in her family. She came back to look for her family again, but she still could not find anyone of her family. Until the truck began to take dead bodies back instead of the survivors, she truly knew that none of her family was survived. She continually escaped from the reality and could not accept it. She dared not to seek for her family’s bodies. At last, she went to Colombo for escaping the reality. These scenes seem to appear in front of the readers ‘eyes. This part is described delicately and makes the readers tear.
