《安·维罗妮卡：现代爱情故事》是英国小说家赫伯特·乔治·威尔斯写的一本小说，小说通过对女主人公斯坦利小姐以及她周边的人和事物的叙述和描写，揭示那个社会部分女性对自由和爱情的向往和追求，她们勇于对腐朽陈旧的事物做出抗争。本次翻译实践选取书中的第三章《危机的早晨》进行翻译。

翻译所选其中第三章，主要讲述了斯坦利小姐在收到曼宁先生写给她的信后，下定决心要去参加舞会。尽管她顽固的父亲对此是十分反对的，为了反抗她的父亲而坚持自己的决定，斯坦利小姐决心离家出走。她并不是想以此来威胁他的父亲，而是希望通过这样的举动来为自己争取真正的自由。然后，向往自由的新生力量和固执保守的旧势力在这一问题上存在严重的分歧，一场危机正在袭来。

在小说翻译之前，故事发生背景、人物性格等都是需要去事先了解的地方。其中，小说开头有一首诗，对它的翻译也是应该注意的地方；另外，小说翻译过程中还存在大量的环境描写、人物心理刻画、人物间的对话，这些同样也是翻译中的难点。因此，在翻译时，例如小说中人名的翻译可以采用多种方法，有音译、意译、音译意译兼用，有的还可以采用加注的方法给予解释；在叙事角度的处理上，采用第三人称，则可以跳出时空的限制，使得作品的时空容量具有无限扩充的可能。

除以上的解决方法之外，在翻译小说过程中，我还借助了丰富的网络资源，充分了解小说本身的写作背景以及小说作者的写作风格，进而深入理解小说的写作目的，做出更好的翻译。

INTRODUCTION

《Ann·Veronica: A Modern Love Story》 is a novel written by H.G.Wells, who is a celebrated English novelist. This novel describes the story of Miss Stanley and her surroundings, through which, this novel reveals the desire of freedom and love of some New Women in that society. They dare to fight for what they want. I　choose Chapter Three, The Morning of Crisis, to translate appropriately into Chinese. 

In Chapter Three, it mainly told the story that Miss Stanley decided to go to the Fad-den dance after receiving the letter from Mr Manning. Although her father, Mr Stanley, was a very stubborn old man, who was strongly against the behavior of Miss Stanley. For the reason of insisting on her decision, Miss Stanley chose to leave this home. To do so, she meant not to threaten her father, but to strive for the freedom. Nevertheless, there were severe divergence between Miss Stanley and her father. A crisis seemed to come.

Before the translation, the background of the story and characters should be learned about in advance. At the beginning of the chapter, there is a poem, which needs to be paid attention to. In addition, there were a large number of description of environment、psychology and dialogue of characters. All of these can be seen as the difficulties in this translation. Therefore, when doing the translation, for example, the translation of the name of characters, there should be a large number of approaches to adopt. Such as, transliteration、free translation or transliteration and free translation. Sometimes, using the way of annotation can also be a good way to give the explanation. When talking about the narrative angles, using third person could surpass the limitation of space time, making the work full of possibilities.

In addition, during the process of translation, the rich source of Internet can also be made full use of. In order to do a better translation, learning about the backgrounds of this novel、styles and purpose of the author is of vital importance.
