Abstract: The depiction of the characters in Tess of D’Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy’s masterpiece, is fairly vivid. Angel Clare is a typical representative of bourgeois intellectuals: open- minded but cruel, rebellious but irresolute, keen on philosophy but unable to break up with religion. This paper aims to analyze Angel Clare from the perspective of his dual character. The first part is an introduction to the novel, current research results and the research direction of this paper. The second part analyzes both the positive side and the negative side of Angel Clare’s character. The third part focuses on the causes of his dual character. And the fourth part discusses the author’s attitudes towards Angel Clare and the growth of the hero.
