Abstract: Tess of the D’Urbervilles, one of the greatest novels of British famous writer Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), describes the misfortune of Tess, a pure, honest, hardworking, and beautiful country girl who is forced to be a murder and hanged. Her tragedy is built up step by step by the two male characters, Alec D’Urberville and Angel Clare. On one hand, they play the role of an angel, using different ways to love and help Tess. On the other, they are vain, greedy and selfish which is the devil that causes Tess’s tragedy. This paper compares the two heroes and discusses their impacts on Tess’s tragedy from three aspects: character features, ways to love Tess and respective representative images, and finally argues that it is these two men who kill Tess.
