Abstract:Tess of the D'Urbervilles is a novel by Thomas Hardy, an English writer, and one of the “Wessex” series. Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of the greatest and most artistic works of Hardy. The work has strong artistic appeal in the realistic description. Hardy has used a lot of images and symbols to make the novel vivid and interesting. He has combined realism with symbolism, and makes the novel mysterious. He was good at making use of symbolism and imagery for making his works meaningful. This paper mainly discusses three aspects: the use of imagery, the use of symbolism and the implication of both.
