Abstract
This thesis is a comparative study of the symbolic meanings of the two novels, The Sun Also Rises and The Great Gatsby, which reflects the similar times and the criticism of the American dream. These two works use a large number of symbols to present very subjective imagination. In the process of writing it not only focuses on the characters of emotion, consciousness, thought, activity, attitude description, and directly construct the consciousness of the characters. The thesis consists of three sections. The first part is to compare the differences of the symbolic meanings of characters in these two works. Secondly, it compares the symbolic meaning of the settings in the novel. Thirdly, the paper analysis the symbolic meaning of wine in The Great Gatsby and the symbolic meaning of colors in The Great Gatsby, and the artistic characteristics of the two novels are different, each of which has a high artistic value. These three sections are the main contents of this paper.
