Abstract:Francis Scott Fitzgerald was one of the most important American writers in the twentieth Century. He was praised as the chronicle of the jazz age and the poet laureate. The great Gatsby, which was published in 1925, is one of the best American novels in the twentieth Century. It tells Gatsby's pursuit of Daisy as her way to achieve the American dream and its final disillusionment.
This paper attempts to make a new interpretation of the distortion and disillusionment of Gatsby's American dream, focusing on the reasons for the death of the American dream and its contemporary significance. Based on the analysis of the character of Gatsby, Daisy and Nick, this paper analyzes the process of Gatsby's American dream from the sublime to the distortion process. Though Gatsby tried all his efforts to win the dream of daisy, he failed at last, and died tragically along with his shattered American dream. The reason why Gatsby's American dream is shattered is complex. Based on the analysis from different aspects, such as internal and external factors, this article also emphasizes that the most essential factor is to ignore the pursuit of spiritual level. Through some plots, this article explores the inevitability of the disillusionment of Gatsby's American dream.
