Abstract
Since The Great Gatsby was published, this great work has been paid attention to by readers and litterateurs. In The Great Gatsby, the writer use a special artistic skill to reappear American “Jazz Age” and creates a charming lady, Daisy who was Gatsby’s first love once and is Tom’s wife now. She is a bourgeoisie rich girl and a representation for American “Jazz Age”. Daisy, as the female role in this novel, is thought as a representation for American dream by Gatsby, the male role. She is a woman full of love and impulsion. Her and Gatsby’s tragedies are always discussed recent years. Most critics think that Daisy is a greedy, mammonish, hypocritical and short-eyed woman. This dissertation is based on the work The Great Gatsby. According to the current motivation theories, this dissertation will have a new analysis on the character Daisy in the The Great Gatsby from three main parts: The background, men’s oppression and women’s weakness.
