Abstract:The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925 which is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of his works. The novel tells the hero, Gatsby’s miserable love story in the “Jazz Time” which regarded money, fame and status as a standard to judge someone’s value. This thesis analyzes Gatsby’s idealism from his naive “dream for love”, “dream for society and his “dream for wealth” so as to reveal the causes to Gatsby’s idealistic disillusionment. It is decided not only by Gatsby’s innocence in his personality, but also the cruel essence of the “Jazz Age”. This thesis aims to provide some suggestions for future researchers.
