Abstract
Along with the advance of technology of mass media, American plays are more and more widely accepted by Chinese people. At the same time, Nida’s translation theory is one of the most popular contemporary western translation theories among the Chinese translation researchers and his “functional equivalence” theory as the core of translation theory is reviewed. The paper points out that the American play subtitle translators should follow the principles of translation with a case study of The Vampire Diaries, based on the core of functional equivalence theory which is employed to further discuss the translating strategies with the application of “functional equivalence” theory and its guiding significance.
The thesis can be divided into four parts: the first part is the introduction, the second part is literature review, and the third part is the study on subtitle translation in The Vampire Diaries from the functional equivalence theory which is shown in colloquialism, conciseness, coherence and condensation. The last part is conclusion.
