Abstract:Martin Eden, the semi-autobiography of the famous writer Jack London, tells us a tragedy of an ambitious young man at that time. However, this is not only the failure of the man,but also the social environment and the miserable people under the time. So,the influence of society,family and individual are the main power of this tragedy. This paper is divided into three parts, each part includes two or three aspects, which aims to analyze the reasons of Martin’s tragedy at length and in all directions. The road of struggling from a sailor to a famous writer in the country, the psychological experience from a despised man to a popular person.The influence of the distinct pecking order, the social relationships, marriage and psychological problems were of importance. In addition, Martin Eden is the reflection of Jack London’s life, which makes more sense to the tragedy.
