Abstract:With the fast development of Chinese economy, English has become a world language and it is commonly used in foreign exchanges and business communications. Chinese government has spent great efforts to improve English teaching in schools at all levels. However, a lot of college students still cannot speak English fluently. In the dissertation, three major elements, students’ different backgrounds, the school’s factors, the “Dumb English” are defined as the reasons affecting oral English fluency. In order to solve the problem, three factors are identified from literature reviewing; that’s learner autonomy, motivation and English teaching methodology. Among them, English teaching methodology is the most vital one that contributes to oral English fluency. Therefore, some countermeasures are proposed to improve English teaching methodology in schools.
