ABSTRACT:In recent years, silence phenomenon has been often observed in English class, and it is more remarkably common in the college English teaching. However, this kind of phenomenon not only made students lose the learning initiative, but it also affected the implementation of classroom teaching tasks and teaching purposes. In this paper, the phenomenon has been surveyed through methods such as questionnaire, classroom observation, etc. Students in English classroom in Chongqing University of Science and Technology were taken as the research subject. It aims at using the theory of learning motivation to analyze English classroom silence phenomenon.
Through the research, the results have proven that teachers’ improper teaching methods and students’ lack of learning motivation have influence on the phenomenon of classroom silence, which has also become a potential factor to influence college students’ English learning. Therefore, finding out the solutions to the phenomenon of classroom silence is very necessary.
