INTRODUCTION
BEFORE I WAS CEO, is a book, which tells the stories of the most accomplished business men and women in the world. It offers just that, a lifting of the curtains on the personal itineraries of twenty diverse CEOs. It also offers advice and looks for commonalities, but it is the first and foremost a collection of personal stories of individuals who talk about what life was like “before I was CEO”. In this process, one chapter was chosen to be translated, namely Father's Footsteps. This chapter offered an introduction of three business men who could walk in their parents’ footsteps: Richard Edelman, Sir Andrew Likierman, and Chris Burggraeve.
The former chapter 8 tells the stories of three people who drew strength from their family situations. And in chapter 9, we meet three people who also have outstanding family backgrounds. They walk in their parents’ footsteps, but they make different decisions when confronting with their families’ heritage.
Whether directly or not you follow your family’s tradition, there’re benefits to shape a good image, which your parents had built. But there’re obviously drawbacks, you might simply not have the same impassion as your parents, and it may be that there is not much future in the profession your parents had.
The author summarized his personal experience of interview with the business giants, and accomplished this book. Talking with these businessmen, the author gained many unknown stories. We will look at what the three successful men with different backgrounds chose to deal with their family heritage in chapter nine, and share some personal lessons we can learn from them：
1. Early on, make choices that give you flexibility.
2. Understand the importance of communication.
3. Be aware that things don't always go up.
