Abstract:Quite a few writing techniques are adopted in A Rose for Emily, a celebrated short story written by William Faulkner. Symbolism, as one of the major techniques, runs through the whole story. This paper aims to analyze the application of symbolism in A Rose for Emily so that readers can have a better understanding of the story as well as what is hidden beneath the surface of the story --- it is the modern civilization, rather than the old values and moral standards which represent nobility, that will eventually rule the world. By analyzing the symbolism Faulkner skilfully adopted in the story, this paper aims to probe into the important role symbolism plays in the story to help highlight the theme, and also the great contributions it has made to literature.
