Abstract:This paper analyzes the humorous effects on the script of The Big Bang Theory based on the cooperative principle proposed by Herbert Paul Grice. The cooperative principle includes four maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. In verbal communication, people usually follow the cooperative principle to ensure that the conversation will go on smoothly. However, people often violate the cooperative principle for some reasons, such as to create a humorous effect. By analyzing the conversation from The Big Bang Theory, this paper is to show that some humorous effects can be derived from the violation of the cooperative principle.
