Abstract: Du Fu, the greatest realistic poet in Tang Dynasty, has an important influence on Chinese poetry and his poems have been regarded as “history of poetry” in Chinese literature. Du Fu was good at exerting allusions to poems which were one of the most prominent artistic features of his poetry. The study of English translation of allusions is not only conductive to convey poet’s thoughts and writing intention, but also conductive to diffuse Chinese classical culture. In this thesis, the author first briefly introduces Du Fu’s poems and the allusions in his poems, and then categorizes them into three types. Then the author compares and analyzes some typical and representative translation of allusions in order to find the right methods of translation. The research on translation of allusions in Du Fu’s poems is an essential part of Du Fu’s poems as well as Chinese classical poetry. This is also the significance of this study.
