Abstract:Doris Lessing was Known as a profound and outstanding feminist writer, her work, “To Room Nineteen”, was a tragedy that described Susan, a modern intellectual woman, who lost herself in her marriage based on intelligence. She wanted to pursuit freedom but the cruel confinement of marriage confined her. Susan ended her life in Room 19 so as to defend dignity. This thesis interprets Susan’s tragedy from external and internal factors. In terms of external factors, this thesis focuses on three factors, such as the oppression of the patriarchy society, her husband’s indifference towards her and her marriage based on intelligence. In terms of internal factors, this thesis focuses on the loss of economic independence and the tortuous development of Susan’s self-awareness.
