Abstract: In daily communication, people may have different conversational meanings according to specific purposes of communication in different contexts. This paper attempts to analyze the connotations produced by violating the principle of cooperation from the prospective of Grice’s cooperative principle, and discuss the causes of them. The study found that people sometimes may meet the needs of communication by deliberately violating the cooperative principle. The main reasons of doing so are for courtesy, humor or disagreement, out of anger and the need of easing tensions, etc.
Key words: Cooperative Principle; conversational implicature; Ode to Joy
