Abstract: Lord of the Flies, written by the famous British writer William Golding, belongs to the desert island literature. It not only inherits the tradition of this kind of literature, but also has some breakthroughs. First, this essay will analyze the history of traditional desert island literature. Then it will introduce some typical novels of traditional desert island literature and try to analyze common features of this literary genre. And finally, it discusses the continuation and development of English traditional desert island literature in Lord of the Flies in the following aspects: plots, the setting of story, characterization, and themes. Lord of the Flies, both the continuation and development of English desert island literature, is a milestone in the development of the desert island literature.
