Abstract
A Rose for Emily is one of William Faulkner's representative works. It mainly deals with a descendant of the declined aristocrat--Miss Emily’s mysterious life experiences. It also exposes the decline of the Southern society after the American Civil War and reveals conflicts between the new south and the old south. The dissertation primarily analyses the causes of Emily’s tragic destiny. She is the victim of three aspects: patriarchy of the south, cruel social reality and her own personality.
Key words : A Rose for Emily; the tragic destiny; the patriarchy
