Abstract
Euphemism is a common linguistic and cultural phenomenon, which involves all aspects of social life. It plays an important role as “lubricating oil” in language communications. In this thesis, researches of euphemism abroad and at home come first. Then, the definition of euphemism is clarified. Next, euphemism is discussed mainly from the perspective of its different pragmatic functions. And finally comes the conclusion. Four significant pragmatic functions here are introduced by analyzing the commonly used euphemism-related words and expressions in English speaking countries. They are the function of avoiding taboos, being polite, disguising and being humorous. The thesis aims at pointing out the vital significance of euphemism in daily communications and encouraging English learners to expand knowledge about euphemism thereby reducing failures in cross-cultural communications as well as promoting the intercultural communicative competence of English major students.
