Abstract
The Old Man and the Sea, as the magnum opus of Ernest Hemingway, has been praised highly and studied continually by scholars at home and abroad. This dissertation, from the perspective of ecocriticism, while parses the natural imagery of The Old Man and the Sea, details the protagonist Santiago’s love for nature, his ambition to control the nature, and the outlook on nature which human beings should have. And further with the cognition of deep ecology and the reflection on anthropocentrism, the dissertation illustrates the symbiotic relationship between human and nature. It also emphasizes that human should respect the values of other organisms in the ecosystem.
