Abstract:Along with the deepening of reform and opening up, cultural exchange between China and foreign countries has been continuously strengthened. More and more foreign films, as a way of cultural communication, are introduced to the Mainland and Hong Kong to enrich people’s cultural life. And the translation of film titles, being good examples of language, reflects the cultural ideology, cultural value orientation and the aesthetic habits of the entire society. However, the same English film title often has totally different Chinese versions in the Mainland and Hong Kong because of the different cultural backgrounds, history deposit and language habits between the Mainland and Hong Kong. This thesis first discusses the usual principles and skills employed often in the translation of English film titles, and then analyses the reasons of the different Chinese title versions of an English film between the Mainland and Hong Kong from the perspective of cross-culture by collecting and contrasting the examples of English and American film title translation between the Mainland and Hong Kong.
