Abstract
Nineteen Eighty-Four is an important anti-totalitarianism political novel in English literature. George Orwell presents readers a vivid description of the real life situation in the Oceania Country,in which it is totally forbidden to own personal feelings or emotions.However, things always go to the opposite. The paper mainly studies the love between Winston and Julia in the background of totalitarianism and analyzes the realness, rebelliousness and vulnerability of love from these three aspects. It is the cruelty of totalitarian system that determines the three unique characteristics of their love. By applying the method of comparison and exemplification, the paper arrives at the conclusion that the love between Winston and Julia is different from that of normal people. Finally the dissertation reveals the truth that their love in totalitarianism is doomed to destruction, so as to arouse people’s thought and draw their attention to the theme of totalitarianism.
