Abstract:Jane Austen is a famous writer in Britain in the early nineteenth century. She writes Sense and Sensibility. This paper is aimed to analyze the changes of Marianne’s female consciousness embodied in the novel and the reasons for her change. In the novel, the growth of Marianne’s female consciousness is particularly obvious. She is born to be a romanticist and she dares to express her feelings towards others. Besides, she is willing to pursue her true love. However, under the influence of social forces and marital values and due to her gradual maturity, she gradually turns into a rational woman. Her growth in female consciousness shows that women should recognize themselves properly and treat others fairly. When sense and sensibility meet, women should manage sense to control sensibility to realize self-improvement.
