Abstract: The Portrait of a Lady is the finest one of Henry James’ early works. It arouses wild public attention due to delicate descriptions of character’s inner world. In this novel, an innocent American girl Isabel refuses an English nobleman and a rich American businessman, but marries a hypocrite and ends up with an unhappy life after marriage. This paper is to analyse the heroine Isabel’s tragic marriage from the perspectives of the weaknesses in Isabel’s character as well as the influences of other people and the social background, in order to help readers form a better understanding of Isabel’s life experiences.

摘要：《贵妇人画像》是亨利·詹姆斯早期的最佳作品。该作品以对人物内心世界的细致描摹而引起广泛关注。在这部小说中，天真的美国女孩伊莎贝尔先后拒绝了英国贵族和美国富商，而选择嫁给一个伪君子，婚后却过上不幸的的生活。本文将从女主人公伊莎贝尔的性格缺陷、他人的影响及社会环境的影响三个角度分析造成伊莎贝尔悲剧婚姻的原因，旨在帮助读者更清晰地了解主人公伊莎贝的生活经历。
