Abstract: William Faulkner is a famous American writer, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. The Sound and the fury is one of his most important works. It depicts the decline process of the Compsons from the end of the 19th century to the 1920s in the American south. Through the analysis of the three important female characters in the novel, this paper tends to show Faulkner’s attitudes towards female: the author’s attitude towards Mrs Compson, who is performed as a tradition ladyhood of the old south, is contempt; Faulkner shows affection and sympathy to Caddy, the most complex character in the novel; the black servant of the family, Dilsey is thought to be the future southern lady.
