ABSTRACT:With the rapid progress of the society and the development of the national economy, there are more and more international cooperation and trade between China and many countries all over the world. Subsequently, more contacts about the legal law of China and other countries all over the world is necessary to know，and it is well known that Law plays an essential role in these international cooperation and trade. Meanwhile, the investors who plan to invest another country have to comprehend the target national law and regulations better. Therefor, the study of the translation of Legal English is of importance very much and necessary.
In this paper, the main purpose is to explore the translations of the word "shall" in legal language with a new research method , which is Computer-based research method. Shall is a model verb, and is the type model verbs of the most frequently used in legal English , and has become one of the most important model verbs in legal English. Hence, it is necessary to do a study about the translations of this word “shall”. This thesis will summarize the meanings of the word "shall" frequently used in Legal English assisted by the computer software ParaConc on the basis of the corpus. It is attempt to show the different translations of the word “shall” in different legal context by analyzing . And then a detailed comparison in the use of "shall" between the corpus and Chinese-English Dictionary(Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary and Cambridge Learner's Dictionary) is made to identify all of the English translations of the word “shall” in legal English. In short, The results show that it is highly necessary to do a study about the modal verbs like shall in legal English.

摘 要: 随着社会的进步以及国民经济的飞速发展，越来越多的国际合作、国际贸易发生在中国和其他各国之间。随之而来的是越来越多的合同涉及到中国及外国的法律，而了解这些法律是必要的。同时，计划到中国或者另一国贸易的投资商必须更好的熟悉目标国的法律、法规。因此，法律英语翻译的研究是非常必要的。而“Shall”一词是在法律英语中应用做广泛的情态动词，并且被认为是法律英语中最重要的情态动词之一。因此，对“shall”一词在法律英语中的翻译研究是有必要的。本文将运用计算机软件ParaConc,在基于语料库的基础上浅析“shall”一词在法律英语中的意义，并结合英汉词典给出的词条做出对比，从而得出“shall”一词在法律英语中所有的译文。总之，本文的结果显示对“shall”等情态动词在法律英语中的翻译研究是十分必要的。
